“The Art of Painting”
Urban Art Festival Amsterdam 2017 presents the exhibition ”The Art of Painting” with the work of 40 international and local urban contemporary artists. This adventurous exhibition takes place in the monumental warehouse “Van Gendthallen”, connected to Amsterdam Roest. Roest is a versatile and creative spot located in what historically was the cold gas building on the eastern island of Amsterdam. The building is transformed into an 800 square meter exhibition area with a combination of wall paintings and canvases.
Techniques of classical painting
“The Art of Painting” explores the engagement of contemporary urban artists to techniques of classical painting. Many of these artists have an academic background in classical painting and spend many hours creating truly well-executed craftsmanship with approaches used by the old masters.
40 of the most acclaimed urban artists
Through the work of 40 of the most acclaimed urban artists who merge the techniques and processes of the classics such as research, studio-based, sketching, modeling etc. and use all mediums of classic painting in their creations such as fresco, oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc., you cannot escape the way they are intimately drawn to the mediums’ ability to present the complexities of urban life and emotion in a two-dimensional form.
In spite of applying the secrets of the old masters, these artists also come from urban and street art cultures and depict modern composition. They create figurative styles that reflect contemporary urban life such as modern politics, portraits, urban landscapes, etc.
Classical techniques translated into urban art
“The Art of Painting” investigates the new thinking of the classical techniques translated into urban creations around manifestations on canvases and murals in the seemingly dematerialised reality that marks our times. These artists are the true pioneers of this new emerging style translating the traditions of classic painting into contemporary times. By co-opting the painting methods of other eras, the artists can retroactively insert the voice of street art into the artistic classic conversation. Their work uses figuration to subvert the painterly tools men have historically used in depictions of art.
